old scans

Sorting through old film scans on a Saturday while I’m at work. Odds and ends.

And of course, the obligatory long-exposure-at-night-colorful-lights shot.

Wordle

Leslie K. Brown mentioned Wordle in her blog and I immediately wanted to try it out. I grabbed the entire text of Walter Benjamin’s The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction and here was my result:
The geeky side of me (um, all of me?) is giddy.

Biennial Shout Out
September 23, 2009 · 2 Comments
I was mentioned in a write up on the 2009 Photography Biennial at the Danforth Museum of Art. I find it really interesting the way someone who has never met me and probably hasn’t seen my artist statement figures out how to describe my work in only one sentence. Take a look for yourself (picture links to article).

NESOP Stairway Show
September 20, 2009 · 2 Comments
I have a show up right now in an unconventional space, the entrance stairway of my alma mater, New England School of Photography. I really took the opportunity to do something different, showing 15 prints from my Faces series. Here are a few pictures of the show— it’s hard to photograph a stairway! Stop by and check it out yourself before the end of the month.

First to Fifty update

You probably thought we had abandoned this pursuit, and even though our lives have gotten so much busier, we’re still at it. Around the middle we’re both antsy to get at making new work instead of marketing previous work, but I am determined to push through and win. Steph, you’re gonna owe me some drinks soon!

This is what I’ll be photographing Saturday night. Pirates, burlesque, and pirate burlesque (and geriatric pirate comedy and bikini-clad pirate rap)—- there’s nothing you could be doing on Saturday night that would convince me you had cooler plans. If you’re in Boston I’d better see you there.

New England Photography Biennial 2009
September 14, 2009 · 1 Comment
Saturday night was the New England Photography Biennial at the Danforth Museum of Art. The show was beautiful and varied and I am honored to be amongst such great company. I saw a lot of familiar faces and new ones, too. I’m posting a few pictures from the show below (though mostly of people looking at my pieces— if you want to see the actual art, get on up to Framingham before November 8th!)

Fierce photographers you need to check out

Dulce Pinzón first came onto my radar with her Superheroes series, in which she photographed Mexican immigrant workers in NYC who send money home to their family, dressed as superheroes, in an effort to redefine the post-9/11 definition of “hero”.

Her new work called People I Like is equally interesting to look at and also has a cultural/political agenda. I think it’s fabulous. From her website:
I am photographing divas, rock stars, partygoers, drama queens and artists, people that fascinate me, all of them Latinos. They are part of what I believe to be a breakthrough in the Latino cultural scene of New York City.
They are all injecting the city with fresh, interesting and chic elements through their art making. I am adding universal stereotypes to their already existing alter egos creating a time-encapsulated portrait.

I cannot stop looking at Maisie Crow’s series called Love Me, which is incredibly moving. Definitely check it out, as well as everything else on her site. She was recently named the winner of the 2009 Ian Parry Scholarship. Good call!

Also, I interviewed Allison Pharmakis on this blog last summer, and now Vice Magazine has interviewed her. If you haven’t checked out her work yet, you’re missing out!

Where have I been and what have I been doing?
1) Moving! We’re finally in our new place in Somerville after weeks of packing and preparing. I’ll post pictures in the future because I’m really excited about the way we’re decorating the place. I’m also excited about living in such an awesome city with such a thriving arts community.
2) Becoming a finalist for Photolucida’s Critical Mass.
3) Printing and prepping for a show of my Faces work (and updating the gallery on my website!).
4) Gearing up for the 2009 PRC Benefit Auction, in which both Steph and I have pieces. I’ll make another post once the online catalog goes live.
5) Visiting family in Indiana. A few snaps:
